Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) Terminal Expansion

As prime architect, CSHQA is leading the design team of nationally recognized experts for the Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) terminal expansion. The design-build project with Q&D construction recently reached the 100% design completion milestone and a groundbreaking for the new terminal is planned for the Spring of 2022.

History of the Terminal Expansion

CSHQA’s aviation experience with the Fresno Airport on terminal remodel and expansion projects dates back almost two decades to 2004. The firm was part of the Airport Master Plan Update team that programmed and planned the future expansion of the terminal building in 2016. Design of the terminal building expansion began in 2019, and since then, there have been 34 CSHQA team members dedicated to the project.

Inspired by Nature

The design team focused on incorporating materials and a color palette inspired by the striking landscape of Yosemite National Park and the surrounding rivers and fields. Beautiful blues, greens, and earth tones create an inviting space that brings travelers back to the simplicity and serenity of nature, away from the hustle and bustle typically associated with airports and travel. A creative river design made from various colored tiles in the terrazzo floor runs throughout the space and mimics the San Joaquin River.

Enhanced Traveler Experience

Successful design is more than making something look unique or visually appealing, it also must enhance the experience of the people who use the space. The architects, engineers, designers, and other members of the project team focused on incorporating public art, natural light, and outside views into the design of the terminal to create a space that delights visitors. And a more spacious FIS with a new arrivals lobby, improved passenger screening, and new international arrival boarding bridge gates ensure that the Fresno Airport is built to comfortably handle the growing airport traffic.
