Boise Airport Terminal Replacement

Boise, Idaho

The award-winning, 378,000-sf Boise Airport Terminal was part of a $110 million expansion program that included the construction of a three-story structure to replace an aging two-story terminal, a two-level roadway system, an expanded air carrier apron, and additional parking.

It was important to the city, the airport commission and the airport director that the terminal evoke a sense of place and reflect Idaho’s unique outdoor beauty. Many architectural design elements symbolize nature; fluid lines representing flowing rivers are juxtaposed with hard lines reminiscent of mountains. The outdoor effect is realized through natural, indigenous materials rising from the ground, giving way to a light metal canopy enveloped by a curtain of glass. Unified surface textures, color, and light are integrated throughout the new terminal, as well as flowing shapes and forms and terrazzo flooring. Large expanses of glass and native materials, such as wood, sandstone, and Idaho travertine, help travelers transcend the rigors of air travel.

The new terminal building includes baggage handling, baggage claim areas, a ticket lobby, a central rotunda, airline operations offices, concessions, airport administration and support areas, and mechanical and electrical service areas. Because of the nationwide push for increased airport security measures, the team worked through a number of unexpected security-related change orders imposed by the federal aviation and homeland security administrations. The resulting terminal became the most modern and advanced airport facility in the country at the time.

We work with the airport on an ongoing basis to upgrade and improve the facility to stay current and efficient, including security, baggage screening systems, concessions, passenger boarding bridges, rental cars, mechanical and electrical systems, parking, roofing, and building finish systems.
